According to career experts, successful people are the ones who manage their time so they can be most productive during their peak hours of motivation. That means they’re most likely to be at their desks between 9 and 11 a.m., as that’s when our brains are sharpest.

2. They Practice an Attitude of Gratitude

Successful people have learned the power of saying “thank you.” According to Dr. John Gottman, author of The Heart of Parenting, the one thing that separates successful couples from those who end up in divorce is their ability to resolve conflicts. The most important part of this process, he says, isn’t the resolution itself; it’s how they get there. Successful people avoid engaging in what Gottman calls “the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” which are: criticism, contempt, stonewalling and defensiveness.

3. They Make a Daily To-Do List

Successful people know not to make any major life changes — like quitting your job or proposing marriage — without first creating a written plan for how to get there (and then giving themselves plenty of time to execute that plan). Think about any major shift you’ve made in your own life. Did you just quit your job without another one lined up? Did you move to a new city without having any idea where you’d be living or working six months from then? Successful people know that even with the best of intentions, things can fall apart at the last minute. They’re careful to plan for problems and setbacks they might encounter along their journey, so they can avoid derailing their progress.

So rather than leaving things up to fate, successful people create a concrete plan for how to achieve their goals and then take the necessary steps — every single day — to get closer and closer to those goals. If you don’t set out specific deadlines for your goals, it’s unlikely you’ll ever achieve them. Make sure your next goal has a deadline attached so you know exactly when it needs to be completed by in order for you to cross it off your list and reap its benefits (and if possible, hit more than one goal at once).

6. They Control the Controllable

Successful people don’t waste time brooding over things they can’t control. But they also don’t simply accept those circumstances as fate, either. Instead, successful people focus on doing whatever is necessary to manage and minimize risk — even if that means driving their car more slowly during a blizzard or walking 15 minutes out of the way to find an easier route across town. They take ownership of their own actions and decisions rather than just letting life happen around them.

Successful people know that the only thing standing in the way of their dreams is they.
